What to Do About a Broken Laptop Touch Pad…

A broken laptop touch pad can be much more difficult to deal with than something simple like missing laptop keys or even a broken laptop screen. Both of which can be simply replaced if the problem is simple enough.

The first thing to do if you are faced with this problem is check if the touch pad hasn’t been accidentally disabled by mistake. Follow these instructions to check, you can use the keyboard or an external USB mouse.

Please note that due to different laptop brands and operating systems, these instructions may differ slightly.

  1. Navigate to the control panel (Start Menu > Settings > Control Panel)
  2. Double-click the Mouse icon
  3. Select the Touchpad tab
  4. This will bring up your manufacturers touch pad settings
  5. Find the setting that gives you the option to enable or disable the touch pad and make sure enable is selected
  6. If disable was selected, switch it to enable
  7. Before you exit, check that another setting similar to ‘Disable touch pad when external USB mouse is detected’ is not selected
  8. Click done

Is it working now?

If enable was already selected than your problem may be more serious. Download the latest driver version for the touch pad on your laptop model. Uninstall the current driver and install the new one.

How about now?

If you are unsure about how to install and uninstall drivers you can find a quick tutorial on Google just by searching. Microsoft help also has instructions on your computer on how to uninstall and install drivers. I hope one of these solutions has solved your problem about now and now you will know how to fix it if it stops working again.

If it still doesn’t work after this trouble shooting you can try calling your manufacturer. They will most likely make you run through what I just explained once again before recommending that they courier your laptop to one of their repair centres. This is fine if you can do without your laptop for 6-12 weeks and your warranty is still in place.

Alternatively, you may consider just buying a new laptop if your current one is quite old. The cost of repairing broken laptops can be very expensive ($500-$1000), especially if it is done by the manufacture.
