Should All SEO Companies Follow a Code of Conduct?

Recently I had another bad experience with a search engine optimization company, the kind of experience that made me think twice about lining someone else’s pocket with my heard earned and invest the money into learning Seo skills in-house.

I work for an IT Support company and this is a very competitive industry on Google. A lot of work needs to carried out in order to keep up with the completion, so finding a reputable company that has the resources to take us to the top of the search engines is of paramount importance to us. To date we have not been able to find a single SEO company that is competent enough to carry out an online marketing campaign.

Anyone that has experienced a similar problem may recognize the following pattern; You receive an endless amount of phone calls each day from SEO companies asking to speak to the person in charge of the “online Marketing”.

Eventually you give in to one of them and get signed up for a trial which of course has “no ties”.

You are actually impressed with the work that is carried out. You decide to give them a go and sign up for an optimization services that commands a healthy monthly fee.

After a few weeks you notice your position in Google starts to decline. You wonder why this is the case and contact the SEO company who respond by telling you that this is a temporary issue and optimization will take a long time because you are in a competitive market.

12 months later and the SEO company have taken thousands of pounds from you. You have seen no improvement whatsoever in your Google position and if anything, you are in a worse position then when you started.

Sound familiar? I bet it does to a lot of you. But why does this happen? There are two possible reasons;

The first possible reason is that the SEO company are using unethical techniques during your trial period in order to move your website up the ranking quickly. Unethical techniques have a powerful effect on a websites rankings initially, but have an adverse effect in the long term.

The second possible reason is that the SEO Company in question has got too big for its boots and does not have the man power to provide an acceptable level of service to their customer base.

I believe that there should be a code of conduct that Internet marketing organizations should follow. One answer to the problem would be to have a standardized price structure across the industry that is “performance related”. Too many companies charge a monthly fee no matter where you appear in Google and for all you know they may not be doing ANY work to optimize your website.

No doubt there are many companies out there that provide an honest service but they are gradually getting outnumbered by unethical organizations.
