For those who love blogging, guest blogging is a perfect opportunity to establis themselves as credible sources. But is it OK to publish guest articles on your site? (Illustration © Yury Zap – Fotolia.com)

Guest blogs deals with writing a number of articles for other sites or blogs. It helps in getting backlinks to your blog, which can allow you in boosting the traffic to your site to a great extent. However, if you allow guest posts to blogger and authors, who fail to give high quality article relevant to your niche area, then make sure that these are simply written to get backlinks to their sites or blogs. Such guest posts could hamper your blogs reputation to a great extent. Also, with such poor quality, the search engines especially Google is seen penalizing such blogs by barring the blog over the search results. Due to this, a number bloggers have now started denying the request to publish blog posts over their blogs. If you are a blogger, who really care about quality and good search engine results, you are justified to stop publishing guest posts over your blog for the following reasons as discussed in the below paragraphs. Let’s check them out:

Poor quality of guest posts

There is no two thoughts about the fact that most of the bloggers write high quality guest posts, however, a few simply write to obtain back links. Hence checking their quality of article is a must before you actually publish it over your blog. You can easily understand the quality of content by simply reading out once provided you are a good writer; have better command over the language and your chosen subject. Besides, you could find a number of tips and tricks to identify low quality content, which you could explore over the web.

Guest posts simply written to get back links

One of the basic reasons, why bloggers simply stop accepting guest posts is that they are simply written to obtain the back links. Even though if you find the guest posts well written, yet they may fail to give any value to your readers, hence accepting such articles will not benefit you or your readers. Plus if you see such value-less articles over your blog the risk of being penalized by Google dofollow rule in more. Once your blog is trapped in this punishment it becomes very difficult to get the lost rankings over search engines. Hence make sure you identify such posts, which are requested to publish over the guest blog section just for the heck of getting backlinks as these would be considered as spam by Google. And Google simply hates the spam links or the do-follow links, which can put you on risk.

You see a decline in traffic

If you see your blog losing traffic despite you have posted quality articles, it’s time to check the guest posts. This decline in traffic could be due to the mismatch in quality, which your readers could sense over your blog posts and the guest posts. If the guest posts lacks the required benchmark, which you have maintained out of sheer hard work and pain then you shouldn’t be ruining it by allowing some low quality guest posts over your blog. Allowing guest posts can also give an impression to your readers that you are not paying much attention to your blog, which can compel to find better content option for them. Guest posts are often free and these as these may not be beneficial to your readers hence if you have adopted this idea to generate more traffic but still cannot see any boost, it’s time to get rid of the same.

Publishing a number of guest posts

If you allow too many guest posts over your blog to see a boost of traffic at your blog, then it’s high time you stop doing so. Publishing a number of guest posts over your blog could hamper the quality, which you have maintained or even fail to provide value to your readers. At such junctures limit the guest blogs and try coming out with well researched and quality articles through your own efforts.

When you get too boring content

The content in your blog posts could be well written in terms of language and grammar; however, they may still be too monotonous and dry for your readers. Such articles are often written by bloggers or writers for their blog content/ratio boost or for the back links. Such content has no meaning or value and your readers would be bogged down seeing them again. At such junctures, you have all reasons to deny publishing guest posts over your blog.

Final word

The above reasons are more than enough to reject the idea of publishing guest posts over your blog. The only way you have is to put the best efforts to develop high quality content with some value in it backed by good research rather than allowing low quality guest post articles. With such efforts, you could end up getting traffic over your blog along with staying away from being penalized by the search engines.

FB graph search vs Google search: Which is best and why?

This is a guest post by, Brianne, writer and blogger who loves writing, traveling and reading books. She also contributes on Reputation Changer.

Facebook has newly introduced its Graph Search which has advanced the searching of content over the internet. Many of us think that both the Google Search and the graph search are quite similar. But actually, there are many differences between the two search engines. You would be surprised if I tell you that the Facebook Graph search has taken over the Google search engine. This is because, in Google search engine, the search is based only on the keywords which we enter. But, in Facebook Graph Search, this is not the case. Here, the search results are based on the natural language and the results include only those which suit your needs. So, this means that, using Graph Search, you can easily get best results without having to change the keywords again and again to get the results you require. If you are willing to learn more about the new Facebook Graph Search and whether it really dethrones the Google Search engine, read on to know.

Do your search in a more social way

Well, one of the big differences between Facebook Graph Search and Google search engine is the method of browsing for information. In the newly introduced Facebook Graph Search, the search results include only those which are liked by people in your network. Hence, you can browse for information in a much easier way. And, this type of method was introduced in Google+ too. But unfortunately, it did not prove to be a success. Facebook, on the other hand, has invented the social way of searching and has also proven to be a success.

It enables multi-dimensional searching

This is another special feature invented by the new Facebook Graph Search. Whenever you search for information on a particular topic using Google Search, you are only provided with short and to-the-point answers. But, in the FB Graph Search, you are provided with links that are suggested by friends who would have looked for the same. Well, I will give you a small example to help you understand better. Just imagine that you are looking for hotels in a town or city. In Google Search engine, you just get to know the name of the hotels and no other details. But, in the FB Graph Search, you can see each and every hotel in a specific area which is visited by your friends.

Making professional contacts for a job

For all your advertised posts, you can contact many professionals easily with the Facebook Graph Search. However, you do not have to waste your time by changing the keywords again and again for better and refined search results. This is because, in Graph Search, the search results will be limited and you can easily find your match. We all very well know that people usually do not tend to get in contact with those who are searching for jobs. So, in Graph Search, you will be given with a more refined search which has only potential employers.

Getting Facebook fans to like your page

Generally, when we run a page about our company, we find it difficult to get more likes. So, many companies usually spend a lot of time paying people to get likes or even looking for people to make their website popular. But, if you are using the Facebook Graph search, you no longer need to worry about this matter. Using this, you can gain many fans easily. It has many filters you can make use of to earn money. So, why spend money unnecessarily to gain fans when the Graph Search is easily available to target your audience?

The major shortcoming of the graph search

We cannot deny the fact that the Facebook Graph Search is really great with many unique features. But, there is also a disadvantage associated with it. The main purpose of Graph Search is to search for jobs and it actually does not prove to be helpful when it comes to searching for employees. Many tell that this is because people do not provide accurate data in their FB accounts and thus, it is not a wise decision for an employer to look for employees here.

Coming to the conclusion, the question still remains unanswered whether Facebook Graph Search has really taken over the Google Search engine. Well, this really depends on what type of information we search over the internet.

My best politics lesson: using social media to connect pupils and politicians

I am now experimenting with Guardian’s Content Plugin for WordPress for a review. This is the first article served this way.

At the end of my first lesson teaching AS politics, one of my students found me at break time to give me some feedback. She stood in my room and declared, with much fanfare, that she was “blown away” by my previous lesson. I stood there with a self-satisfied glow. I had been supremely worried about teaching a very academic subject, so this was just the vilification I needed.

Unfortunately, the glow faded as quickly as it arrived when said student informed me that she understood nothing from the lesson. As this was so early on in the course, the conversation filled me with dread and signaled a complete change in approach to how I taught the course.

My original approach was ‘stimulated debate’ – students would go through a stimulus and debate the relevant points that were raised. But this made the assumption that they had some idea of the key concepts they were debating, which they didn’t. So I decided that, for the first term at least, I would utilise my ‘teachnology’ skills.

I wanted to get my students to understand some of the basic concepts of politics and the ideologies of the various parties. My ultimate goal was to get my students following some of the main players in British politics on various social networks, to engage them in debate and ask them to explain their party’s views. To get to this stage, however, the students needed a good understanding of who to follow and what the parties they were associated with.

For the first part of the lesson, the students worked in small groups and brainstormed prominent politicians. This group work was really useful as it meant the kids weren’t working from a limited pool of knowledge and could share names. Once students had engaged with this activity they used a fantastic online resource, Padlet, to post the names that they gathered. These names were then grouped according to party allegiance or ideology. This information was then exported and shared with all the class in a PDF format.

Some of the politicians under review were of the more interesting type and I was pleasantly surprised to find that students knew who Nigel Farage and George Galloway were. The diverse nature of the politicians under the spotlight was refreshing and the students were encouraged by their own knowledge.

This activity naturally allowed students to use the selection of politicians discussed and delve a little deeper into their ideologies and the party system. Working in different groups students chose a selection of the identified politicians and conducted deeper research.

Each group were given access to a blank presentation, through Google Drive. Each member of the group was given a slide to present information about their chosen figure. The beauty of this activity was because the presentation was cloud based, students didn’t need to sit in close proximity to each other. Using the chat facility on Google was particularly handy because students could communicate with each other on their progress.

Once the presentations were complete, the students presented their research to the other groups. At the end of the presentations, the audience asked questions, which consolidated learning and prompted debate.

Leading into the next lesson, students were asked to follow a range of politicians, some of whom could be from their research in the previous lesson. A number of students chose to follow George Galloway and were a little taken with the Respect MP. It may seem silly but as soon as they found a politician that they could engage with, their level of participation within class discussions grew. It was not surprising that the students were taken with Mr Galloway in particular – he was the only MP to reply.

When teaching this lesson again, we will build structured questions into the activity. By doing this I hope that the questions will be more targeted to each individual MP – not simply asking their opinion on a general point, which will hopefully garner a better response rate.

The research and use of technology placed the task firmly in their hands and allowed them the freedom to explore concepts in an inviting environment. By asking students to use mediums that they are familiar with, it placed politics into sphere that connected with them on a level they understood and had an affinity with. The immediacy of these social networks also allowed students to feel that they were part of the system.

The major challenge, when undertaking such an activity using social networking, is access to the relevant network. We used Twitter and in some schools allowing students access can be a big no-no. Should you encounter such an issue, speak to your network manager and a relevant member of your senior leadership team. If you explain the need and usefulness of such an activity, you could sway the relevant people.

The biggest piece of advice I would offer before tackling a lesson of the kind is to ensure, and it sounds funny saying it, that you are as familiar with Twitter as you can be. Immerse yourself with hashtags, following, searching, direct messaging and blocking. Be vigilant to the ‘people’ who follow you as some may not be appropriate – this includes other students. You could get around this issue by setting up a department/school Twitter account – this way there can be no blurring of the professional/personal line.

We couldn’t follow this type of lesson for the whole year because of the essay based nature of assessment. However, by evaluating my practice and approaching the lesson from a different angle, it helped engage my students and capture their attention.
